My new dog was adopted today. A little sweetheart. Perhaps a little too sweet. Everytime he’s left alone, even when I go on the front porch for a smoke, he starts whining and howling.

I Know that there are anti-bark collars available, but do that work for howling? Whining isn’t so bad cuz the neihbours can’t hear it, but the howling will be a problem.

I dont want to use the shock collars, but I’ve heard about citronella collars that might work. They spray citronella in front of the dogs face when they bark, so it doesn’t hurt them, just bugs them a bit. But I want to make sure it’ll work for howling.

So do they work for howling, and where’s the cheapest one I can get online? The place to find one is just as imporant to me as knowing if they work.

THANKS!!!

  • DP:

Actually they don’t work for howling or whining.. Barking, they are great, barking and howling they are going to be able to get past the collar and continue.

  • Try giving your dog a Kong stuffed with peanut butter every time you have to leave him.

Citronella can be benign, but it can also create a lasting, fearful memory, oddly enough.

Try taking your dog on leash with you when you go outside to smoke, or better yet, save some $$ and quit. :-)

I’d invest in some Positive Reinforcement training classes asap, to help your dog gain some confidence and peace of mind.
