My dog has recently begun to howl like crazy. If I don’t find someway to make her be quiet at night, my dad will “get rid of her.” So I purchased an anti-barking collar that defers the dog from making noise by spraying her w/ this harmless stuff. It’s suppose to work for howling as well.
Problem is that it’s not spraying her. Yes, she’s pretty fluffy. But she can be loud and the sprayer isn’t even hitting her fur or doing anything it’s suppose to. I tried it myself (by giving multiple loud shouts & barks into the device), & nothing happened. The only time it seemed to spray was when you blew really hard into the device, which really doesn’t help anything.Does anyone know what’s wrong w/ it? It’s a petsafe deluxe kind, & it isn’t one of those cheap ones either. & I made sure it’s on as well when using it. Some people may say her fur may be the problem. However, the device said that you can put a bandana over the fur. But this is done so that the spray will actually hit her chin (& not for the sake of the device to pick up the sound & vibrations). & that still doesn’t explain why it didn’t work for me.
Any ideas as to what is going on?Also, do you know if those ultra high pitch frequency boxes work on loud animals? Or is there anything else that’s actually effective that you can recommend. Just FYI, my dog is not a small dog (she’s like medium husky or German Shepard size).

I brought my dog one of those non cruel ultra sonic anti bark collars and its not working at all. He dosent care, he looks stupid with it on but Im pretty sure he dosent care that we laugh at him. As it seems he was beaten by his previous owners I have to be careful of my tone of voice, any quick hand motions around him, as he thinks that you are going to hit him. How can I train him with out making him scared. I dont want to see him scared. Hes really tiny and a lovely dog and he is learning that we are NOT going to hurt him. But its a slow and painful process. How do I make him stop barking at things he is scared of with out making him scared??
I cant use loud noises coz he really freaks out, he hides when I wash the dishes because of the sounds…hes got a few issues we’re workin on atm 
He is a chi x silky terrier so we are told. He barks at people coming to the door, cars driving pass, loud noises from outside (which I know is pretty normal as my other older chi x does the same thing). The issue is when he is outside. He will sit in the car port barking at nothing, some times the neighbors but when they go away he keeps on going. He’ll sit at the back of yard barking at nothing. Some times he’ll chase birds and bark. But he just stands at the back of the yard barking at nothing. He does this EVERY morning. I normally have to go outside and carry him in. Hell often sit at the back door barking. Its normally not triggered by anything, he just starts doing it. I think it might be a game but i just don’t know how to stop it. Iv ignored it. Gone outside and said ‘no’. Brought him inside. Threatened to shave his fur off Im running out of ideas and I don’t want to get in trouble with my neighbors…

We are very happy with the citronella bark collars. We have three dogs, all are terriers and they can get into a bark-fest. These collars have worked wonders, and are truly humane– they work without pain. I wouldn’t use one of the shock collars. They are not “humane”- they shock and they hurt! If you don’t believe me, put it on your own neck and give it a try. I have seen dogs with burns on their necks from those. (As an aside, yes, I tried this citronella collar too. I let it spray me full in the face. Not pleasant, but not painful.) If you love your dog, try this method. BTW, don’t buy the expensive replacement batteries here. They are a standard size and can be obtained at any Walgreens, Target, etc for around .
Unfortunately, the collar didn’t do anything for our dog. I’ve tried the collar multiple times (went thru the refill can already), but she is very happy to just be barking away. The only effects I can figure out in our case is that we are out , and the dog smells like Citronella.
On the positive side, the device has been pretty durable and sits on the dog well. Citronella just didn’t work for us.
