We are very happy with the citronella bark collars. We have three dogs, all are terriers and they can get into a bark-fest. These collars have worked wonders, and are truly humane– they work without pain. I wouldn’t use one of the shock collars. They are not “humane”- they shock and they hurt! If you don’t believe me, put it on your own neck and give it a try. I have seen dogs with burns on their necks from those. (As an aside, yes, I tried this citronella collar too. I let it spray me full in the face. Not pleasant, but not painful.) If you love your dog, try this method. BTW, don’t buy the expensive replacement batteries here. They are a standard size and can be obtained at any Walgreens, Target, etc for around .
Unfortunately, the collar didn’t do anything for our dog. I’ve tried the collar multiple times (went thru the refill can already), but she is very happy to just be barking away. The only effects I can figure out in our case is that we are out , and the dog smells like Citronella.
On the positive side, the device has been pretty durable and sits on the dog well. Citronella just didn’t work for us.

It is always a good thing to look first at reviews when you are considering buying a small dog barking collar. I think you may have a little more trouble finding a collar to fit a small dog, so keep looking, they are there online if they aren’t at your local pet store.
Look at what the reviewers are saying about the collars in relation to which type of dog. Consider if they are discussing a dog similar to yours.
Then you will need to decide which type of small dog barking collar you would feel happy using. Would you go for one which emitted an ultra-sonic sound that only your dog could hear? Would you rather have one which just vibrated when it sensed your dog was barking? Would you choose one which would give the dog a shock when they barked? Or would you consider one which released a small spray of citronella the best one to choose? You will find that the citronella collar might not be available in a small size and they need constant refills of citronella, especially if your dog barks a lot and the collar sprays a lot.

You need to consider the other implications of using an ultra sonic collar. You might not be able to hear it but your dog will and of course so will other pets in your home. You may find that the pets will get a little confused as to why they are hearing this sound. Even the animal wearing the collar may not connect the sound with his barking.
None of them could be construed as cruelty to dogs, they are merely either a smell they don’t like, a sound they don’t like or a feeling they don’t like. Nothing that would harm them in any way.
You have to consider others also when you have a dog which barks either incessantly or excessively. If you have to go out to work you wouldn’t feel too happy to know that your dog was causing annoyance to others, either the rest of your family or your neighbors.
Every day dogs are taken away from their neighbors if they are known to constantly cause a nuisance in this fashion. I am sure you would do anything to avoid that scenario.
