How To Potty Train Your Puppy In 7 Days! *updated
Training a dog to heel is a great exercise which develops several different capacities in a dog. In addition to furthering their learning ability and body awareness, it also aids in teaching them to communicate better with their human. It should be taught like any other trick or behavior, by breaking it up into small successive steps and making it a highly rewarding experience. It is normal for it to take several days and even weeks to get the kind of results demonstrated in this video. Remember to work on it consistently and always allow the dog to be successful. If they are unable to meet reward criteria, then as trainers we must lower criteria, making it easier for several sessions before making it more difficult once again. If this advice is followed, just about any dog can learn to do this. www.pamsdogacademy.com This is an easy way to get your dog to bring back an item (toy, frisbee, ball, tug). I like to first see where the dog would like to take the item. Then I just position myself at that spot. So, when my puppy kept taking his toy to the shade, then I figured that I would stand in the shade and when he brought it back to me, I would click and give him a treat, then toss the toy again. The more I would repeat this the more he developed muscle memory and started bringing it back to me, even if I was not in the shade. Soon, he developed a love for the game and understood that in order to get the toy back, he needed to bring it to me. Plus, it was more fun playing with me than just watching the toy lay there in the shade. He loves to fetch items now and is ready and willing anytime something is thrown.
I hope this helps. Maybe your dog likes to take the item under the coffee table or into his crate. Then that is where you should start the toss from. Have a great week! Pam, Isabelle, Bandit & Twix
